imagine not knowing how to play pool, when you scratch, you can place the cue ball anywhere, BUT if you scratch on a break, then it only goes behind the second dot (you can also not hit any balls that are also behind the second dot). You also table scratch when you don't hit any ball, allowing the next player to reset it as a normal scratch. Some house rules, (retarded rules people make up to sound cool) state that when you hit your opponents ball first, you lose your turn regardless, but i believe it is a scratch as well.
