whats the background of the first setup?
Not sure about the lights on or off when playing, but I used to play FPS games with the lights off, and I'd have to stop after a few hours because my eyes would start to hurt, and would cause me to actually vomit. Until I tried playing with lights on in my room, if not with just ambient lighting, and made a whole difference. My eyes wouldn't hurt anymore, and I could game even longer.
Desk is literally a piece of wood resting on 2 ikea lockers.
